How to Forward Calls from Grasshopper to Ringing.io

Grasshopper is built on extensions with a real call-forwarding schedule per extension — add your Ringing.io number, set the schedule, and you are done.

USCAVoIPBusiness

Grasshopper natively supports time-of-day schedules and call blasting (simultaneous ring across up to 15 numbers) at the extension level, so every scenario below is a built-in setting. Everything happens at Settings > Call Forwarding > Extensions in the Grasshopper web app.

1

Forward every call to Ringing.io

Configure the extension to forward all calls to your Ringing.io number 24/7, so the AI receptionist answers everything.

When to use this: You want Grasshopper to handle the inbound number and Ringing.io to answer every call with the AI receptionist.
  1. 1

    Sign in to Grasshopper

Open grasshopper.com and sign in to your account.

  2. 2

Open Settings > Call Forwarding > Extensions

In the top navigation, click Settings, then choose Call Forwarding Settings, then Extensions.

  3. 3

    Edit the target extension

Click the Edit button next to the extension you want to forward.

  4. 4

    Add your Ringing.io number

Enter your full 10-digit Ringing.io number as the forwarding destination. Remove any other forwarding numbers so the call goes only to Ringing.io.

  5. 5

    Set the schedule to 24/7

Under the schedule for this number, choose "24/7" so calls are forwarded at all times.

  6. 6

    Choose call-handling behavior

Under call handling, pick how Grasshopper announces the call. For an AI receptionist, choose the option that connects the call directly (no "press 1 to accept" prompt) so Ringing.io picks up automatically.

  7. 7

    Save and test

Save the extension. Call your Grasshopper number from another phone — it should route to Ringing.io within a few seconds.

How to undo: Go back to Settings > Call Forwarding > Extensions > edit the extension. Remove the Ringing.io number and re-add your previous forwarding destination, or set the destination to Voicemail. Save.

Note: If you leave the call-screening / "press 1 to accept" option on, Ringing.io will hear the screening prompt and never accept the call. Turn screening off for any number that forwards to an automated answering service.

2

After-hours only — Ringing.io covers nights and weekends

Use Grasshopper's built-in schedule so your personal phone rings in business hours and Ringing.io takes over after hours.

When to use this: You want to answer your own calls during business hours and have the AI receptionist cover nights, weekends, and lunch breaks.
  1. 1

Open the extension in Settings > Call Forwarding > Extensions

Sign in to Grasshopper, go to Settings > Call Forwarding Settings > Extensions, and click Edit on the extension you want.

  2. 2

Add your personal phone as the business-hours destination

Enter your cell or desk number. Under its schedule, choose "Custom schedule" and set your business hours by day (e.g. Mon-Fri 9am-5pm).

  3. 3

Add Ringing.io as the after-hours destination

Click to add another forwarding number, enter your Ringing.io number, and under its schedule choose Custom — then set it to cover the remaining hours (evenings, overnight, weekends). The schedule field accepts the inverse of your business hours.

  4. 4

    Choose the ring order

Make sure the two numbers are set to ring "in order" by schedule rather than simultaneously, so each only rings during its assigned window.

  5. 5

Turn off call screening on the Ringing.io entry

Disable the "announce caller" / "press 1 to accept" option on the Ringing.io destination so the AI receptionist connects immediately.

  6. 6

    Save and test

Save. Test a daytime call (should ring your phone) and an after-hours call (should reach Ringing.io). You can change your laptop or phone clock temporarily to verify both paths quickly.

How to undo: Edit the extension and either delete the Ringing.io destination or change its schedule back to 24/7 / never. Save.

3

Ring your phone and Ringing.io together (call blasting)

Use call blasting to ring your phone and your Ringing.io number at the same time — whichever answers first connects.

When to use this: You want to take live calls when you can but never miss one. Whoever picks up first (you or the AI) takes the call.
  1. 1

    Open the extension

Settings > Call Forwarding Settings > Extensions > Edit on the extension.

  2. 2

Add both phones to the forwarding list

Enter your personal phone as one destination and your Ringing.io number as a second destination.

  3. 3

Set the ring strategy to simultaneous (call blasting)

Choose the option that rings every forwarding number at the same time, rather than in order. Grasshopper labels this "call blasting" and supports up to 15 destinations.

  4. 4

Set ring duration and disable screening on Ringing.io

Pick a ring duration (typically 20-25 seconds). On the Ringing.io entry, turn off any call-screening prompts so the AI picks up cleanly.

  5. 5

    Save and test

Save. Call the Grasshopper number and verify both phones ring at the same time. If you answer first, the AI hangs up; if the AI answers first, your phone stops ringing.

How to undo: Edit the extension, remove the Ringing.io destination, and save. Your personal phone will be the only forwarding number.

Note: Call blasting on the same call counts as a single forwarded call for billing purposes, but the AI may occasionally beat you to the punch on calls you wanted to take. Tune the ring delay or use the "after-hours only" pattern if you want stricter control.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I configure call forwarding in Grasshopper?

In the Grasshopper web app, go to Settings > Call Forwarding Settings > Extensions, then click Edit next to the extension you want to configure. Everything — destinations, schedule, call handling, call blasting — lives on that extension edit screen.

Does Grasshopper natively support time-of-day schedules?

Yes. Each forwarding number on an extension has its own schedule. You can choose 24/7, weekends only, or build a custom schedule per day of the week. This is built in — no workaround required for after-hours routing.

How many numbers can ring at once with call blasting?

Up to 15 forwarding destinations can ring simultaneously when call blasting is enabled. This counts as one forwarded call for billing, but every destination needs to be a valid US or Canada number.

Why does Ringing.io not answer the forwarded call?

The most common cause is that Grasshopper's call-screening / "press 1 to accept" option is enabled on the Ringing.io destination. Ringing.io cannot interactively press 1, so the call never completes. Edit the extension and disable the announce-caller / screening option for the Ringing.io entry.

Will SMS to my Grasshopper number be forwarded to Ringing.io?

No. Grasshopper call forwarding redirects voice calls only. SMS and MMS continue to arrive in the Grasshopper inbox and apps. If you need SMS routed somewhere, configure that separately in Grasshopper.

Does Grasshopper charge per forwarded call?

Forwarded minutes count toward your plan's minute allowance. There is no special per-call fee for forwarding to a US number, but every forwarded minute is a billable minute on most plans — keep this in mind if your plan has a minute cap.

Can I forward only specific callers to Ringing.io?

Grasshopper does not expose per-contact forwarding rules at the extension level. The closest pattern is to use a separate extension for a different audience (e.g. an "after-hours" extension forwarded to Ringing.io) and publish that extension number to the audience you want to route differently.

Don't have a Ringing.io number yet?

Get one in five minutes, set up your AI receptionist, then come back to this page to forward Grasshopper.
